Our Story: Authenticity Over Scams
Twenty-five years ago, our founder arrived in Cambodia to see Angkor Wat but fell in love with the “Great Lake,” the Tonle Sap. After experiencing the frustration of hidden taxes and commission-driven “souvenir stops,” he decided to create a different kind of experience.
Partnering with a local boat owner—who remains with us to this day—we launched Tara Riverboat. Our mission is simple: to provide world-class tours with guaranteed low prices, zero scams, and a deep commitment to the local community.
Why Tara Riverboat is Different
We believe that by having the best staff, the safest boats, and over 20 years of experience, we provide the best lake and river cruises in Cambodia.
A Century of History: Our flagship, the Queen Tara, is a 97-year-old restored cargo vessel. We prioritize recycling and restoring historic vessels over building new ones.
100% Solar Powered: The Queen Tara runs entirely on clean energy. We use our excess solar power to charge batteries for local floating families who lack electricity.
No Waiting, No Hassle: We own our entire fleet. You never have to wait for a boat to “fill up” before departing.
Local Expertise: Our 67 staff members are mostly from the floating villages. They aren’t just guides; they are stakeholders in their own community.
Safety First: We are fully licensed and insured (Public Liability Insurance) from hotel to hotel. Our boats feature unique flat-bottomed hulls for stability in shallow canals.
Our Sustainable Impact
We are a social enterprise dedicated to the Tonle Sap biosphere. We commit 100% of our profits back into our community programs.
| Program | Impact |
| Tara Apprentice Program | Training locals in welding, mechanics, and boat building. |
| Education & Support | Sponsoring a free school and providing solar units to homes in need. |
| Eco-Innovation | Using biodiesel, bamboo fixtures, and furniture recycled from old car tires. |
| Child-Safe Certified | Working with NGOs to protect children in the communities we visit. |
