Whispers of the Tonlé Sap

By Peter Gardiner | Tara Riverboat Cambodia Blog

Beneath the sky’s soft amber hue,
Where water meets the endless blue,
Lies Tonlé Sap — Cambodia’s heart,
A living soul, a work of art.

Its seasons breathe, expand, recede,
A pulse of life the land will need.
When monsoon rains begin to fall,
The mighty river changes all.

The Tonlé reverses — a rare, grand sight,
The floodplain wakes in emerald light.
The forest drowns, yet life is born,
In silver ripples of the dawn.

Stilted homes rise proud and high,
Wooden fingers touching sky.
Children leap from beams to streams,
Chasing fish and floating dreams.

The flooded forest whispers low,
Where tangled roots in shadows grow.
Lotus blooms and herons glide,
Through mirrored worlds where spirits hide.

At dusk, the Queen Tara drifts slow,
Across the lake’s eternal glow.
A sunset spills its molten gold,
On stories ancient, yet retold.

Oh, Tonlé Sap — so vast, so deep,
You cradle those who wake and sleep.
From dawn’s first light to firefly’s gleam,
You hold the heart of Cambodia’s dream.
