Understanding Tonlé Sap Water Levels & Year-Round Travel Options

The Tonlé Sap Lake is one of Cambodia’s most remarkable natural wonders, and part of what makes it so special is that it changes with the seasons. Unlike a typical lake, Tonlé Sap rises and falls dramatically throughout the year, shaped by rainfall and the flow of connected rivers.

At the moment, water levels are around 190 cm (just under 2 metres). This is completely normal for this time of year. Because the lake isn’t perfectly flat, lower water levels mean that larger boats used for direct cruises between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh temporarily stop operating. This seasonal pause usually runs from late January through to mid-July and happens every year.

While full lake cruises may be on hold during this period, there’s still plenty to enjoy. Cruise-and- land tours continue to operate all year round, offering a comfortable and scenic way to travel between destinations regardless of water levels.

The good news for visitors is that Tonlé Sap’s floating villages can be visited year-round. These experiences use smaller, flat-bottomed boats, which are perfectly designed for changing conditions and can navigate the lake safely even when water levels are lower.

Seasonal changes are simply part of life on Tonlé Sap — and part of its charm. No matter the time of year, there are always wonderful ways to experience the lake, its communities, and the unique rhythm of life that surrounds it.
