Itinerary

Take a break from visiting temples and experience the amazing floating fishing villages and Stilted villages homes of Kompong Khleang on a day tour from Siem Reap. Enjoy the scenery on the boat ride (traditional long tail type) and meet the children and teachers at the local floating school. Our guide for this tour is actually from this same village, so can give you a great insight as to how the village operates. This village receives very few visitors as its 50km from Siem Reap, but certainly worth the extra effort, the trip out to the village is also interesting as we visit the local brick making kilns, a few stops on route also to explore the countryside, rice fields and taste of the sticky rice.

Don’t miss this opportunity to visit the unique and remote floating fishing village of Kompong Khleang, as Kompong Phluk, Kompong Khleang is mainly made up of stilted homes raising some 10 meters high, however does also have a small floating village, but not a large one like the floating villages of Chong khneas, its located on the Northeast of the Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and the richest fishing lake in the World. The Tonle Sap is a unique ecological hotspot. Kompong Khleang is situated around 50km from Siem Reap. (Please note Kompong Khleang does not have a flooded forest as does Kompong Phluk, but it is a much larger village.

Your experienced guide (born in this village) will pick you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned car or minivan, before proceeding up Route 6 to Kompong Khleang. Along the way you will pass markets and villages and also have a few stops on route, there are many things to see along the way including brick making, kilns and rice fields, as well as the edge of the Great Tonle Sap Lake. It is here you will transfer to a special river craft and enjoy a relaxing and fascinating journey up the Khleang River. (our boats we use for the river and lake are of the traditional style, they have special flat-bottomed designs and are ideally suited to this village as we can enter into areas no other boats can)

Upon arrival at the village, you will visit the floating school to hand out school supplies, as well as meet the teachers and school children. This is the tour’s way of supporting the local village school. (with village chief wishes)

You will then have time for lunch at a local restaurant (included in the price) as well as the afternoon free to relax and enjoy the cool breezes from the Great Tonle Sap Lake. You can also take advantage of the amazing photo opportunities the floating village provides, including the houses built on stilts – some even 10 meters high.

We will then transport you back to your waiting air-conditioned vehicle and drop you off back at your hotel. (The village of Kompong Khleang gets very few tourists, as its a bit further away, but certainly worth the effort). (As always 100% of all our profits go back into the villages we visit) with our 20 years of experience in all the lakes and villages, we certainly know our way around, this makes us the best in the guided tours of Kompong Khleang.

Tara Riverboat tours own all our boats, so no waiting around for other guests to fill up the public boats like other operators rely on, this saves you both time and money.

Like all our tours, no more to pay, zero scams, just good clean service with a smile.

Sail into an adventure with Tara Riverboats.

This is an exciting and different way to travel, we Cruise/land tour, we go both ways Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and Siem Reap to Phnom Penh Daily. Travel from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap has always been difficult due to the ever-changing water levels on the Tonle Sap Lake, even in the wet season when the water levels are high enough you have other issues, low lying bridges, making the riverboats unable to pass, storms on the lake that can make the crossing treacherous. fishing nets and water hyacinth are also issues, the sheer boredom of crossing the lake as there is nothing to see apart from vast swathes of water, not anymore.
